Verbo + partícula = sentido novo

O que é um phrasal verb.

give + up = give up = desistir
look + after = look after = cuidar de

A partícula muda tudo: give (dar) vira give up (desistir). Você não consegue adivinhar o sentido pela soma das palavras — é preciso aprender o conjunto.

Troque a partícula, troque o sentido

Um verbo, vários significados.

! O mesmo verbo "take" gera seis sentidos diferentes só trocando a partícula. Por isso phrasal verbs assustam — mas seguem padrões.

Separável vs inseparável

Onde vai o objeto?

Separáveis — objeto no meio ou no fim

Com substantivo, tanto faz. Mas pronome vai sempre no meio.

Pick up the kids. / Pick the kids up.
Pick them up. ✓   Pick up them ✗

Inseparáveis — sempre juntos

O objeto vem depois da partícula, nunca no meio.

I'll look after the dog.
look the dog after ✗
! Regra de ouro do pronome: pick it up ✓, nunca "pick up it". Pronome (it/them/him) sempre fura para o meio.

O erro que todo aluno comete

Conjugue o verbo, não a partícula.

She gets up at 6. (get → gets)

He gave up smoking. (give → gave)
contínuo
They're looking after the baby. (look → looking)

Só o verbo muda de forma; a partícula fica igual. "give up" → gave up, given up, gives up, giving up. A confusão clássica é deixar o verbo na forma base.
